far south coast - new south wales

Tathra Beach

Tathra Beach is 2.5 km in length and faces East. Tathra Beach is renowned for its pristine, clean waters and consistent surf for surfers, boogie boarders, body surfers, swimmers and children. At the southern end of the beach is the Tathra Surf Club who patrol the beach. Patrol flags are situated in front of the surf clubhouse during the summer and Easter holidays.

Offshore winds blow from the South-West and West. However, the prominent southern headland provides protection from southerly winds. It’s best to head out for a surf early in the morning before the midday, onshore, North-East winds arrive (if forecasted). Southerly swell swings around the headland creating a lovely wave that surfers of any experience can catch into the sandy banks along the beach. A spot known as ‘the clubhouse’ (in front of the Tathra Surf clubhouse next to the flagged area) is well known for its consistent waves perfect for beginner surfers. More experienced surfers tend to find better waves at various sandbanks further up the beach at spots such as ‘the pole’. On the odd occasion, the Bega river mouth at the northern end of the beach has a classic left-hander but watch out for the current.

There are plenty of local surfers who can rip it up out there. The locals are all friendly and happy to let tourists experience our lovely breaks as long as they don’t get dropped in on. Basically just remember your surf etiquette and everyone will get along swimmingly. Most importantly enjoy the waves with everyone else, including the grommets.

Tathra Beach has reliable surf all year round and provides suitable waves for all surfing skill levels and experience.

Tathra Beach & Bike are located on the main drag of Tathra. They have information and equipment for mountain biking and beaching.
